Bummer beach race runner dives in to save drowning woman at Umdloti
"I saw someone pointing at the sea, and when I saw a woman waving for help, I took off my shoes, left my bag and ran to help" - Cameron Hofer.
A runner taking part in the 23km Bummer Beach run from Ballito to Umhlanga did not hesitate to dive into the waves to save a drowning woman when he heard her cry for help on Sunday morning.
Cameron Hofer (22), from Umhlanga, was passing Umdloti when he noticed the swimmer in distress. “I saw someone pointing at the sea, and when I saw a woman waving for help, I took off my shoes, left my bag and ran to help,” said Hofer.
He said when he got to the water, a surfer came to assist and together they got the woman to shore.
The UKZN student said the woman seemed to be in her forties.
Hofer said he could not get her and the surfer’s names because he had a race to finish.
Despite the quick swim the valiant runner managed to finish the race in a good time of three hours, thirty-six minutes and three seconds.
