Water at your door

The project will be a cross border scheme with Umziyathi district municipality and it is expected to be completed by May next year.

The R8 million upgrade of the Ngcebo Water Treatment Works will provide 31 000 households in the rural Ngcebo community in Maphumulo with stand pipes in their yards.

This will be a dramatic step up for the residents, who are currently walking on average 15 to 20 minutes to collect water from community stand pipes.

Speaking at Hlangabeza High School sport grounds during the 16 years of local government celebrations last Thursday, Ilembe mayor, Welcome Mdabe, said the water treatment works currently has the capacity to produce four million litres a day and once it is upgraded it will produce 12 million litres per day.

“You will no longer get water from a tap on the side of the road. You must get water in your yards and that water needs to be clean,” said Mdabe.

Ngcebo Water Treatment Works will supply water to Njunjambili, Bothani/Vumba, Thafamafi, Kranskop town, Hermansberg, Matimatolo, Eshane and Balcom/Kwasizabantu areas.

The project will be a cross border scheme with Umziyathi district municipality and it is expected to be completed by May next year.

This project comes with 16 jobs opportunity for locals and so far 12 people have been sent on electrical and plumbing courses.

Mdabe later addressed Ndwedwe residents at Jonny Makhathini Hall, where the community was updated about the construction of the R27 million Ndwedwe Town upgrade.

The upgrade includes the installation of about 11km PVC water pipe and 14km of sewer mains as well as the provision of a package waste water treatment plant.

Ndwedwe municipality mayor Maxwell Hadebe said the project started in 2014 and is due to be completed by August 3.

“The waste water treatment plant seems to be going well, the pipeline is almost complete sitting at 90 per cent. The sewer works is slowly coming up from behind at about 80 per cent,” said Hadebe.
