Police first, tow truck later

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said the removal of vehicles before the police's arrival was criminal because it interfered with the investigation.

A growing number of people in call on the assistance of break-down services and security companies when they have a vehicle accident and neglect to call the police.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said the removal of vehicles before the police’s arrival was criminal because it interfered with the investigation.

“This has to stop. Some people only realise that they are supposed to call the police when it is time to claim from their insurance companies,” said Pillay.

He emphasized that this was even more serious is there was a death in the accident.

“When someone has died no breakdown company is allowed to tow away your vehicle. Police will provide a breakdown to take the car for testing.”

There have been cases where people have come to the Umhlali police station, looking for their cars, only to discover the police do not even have a record of the accident.

Contact Umhlali police on 032-9479900 for more information.
