Rehab centre hits the jackpot
The stakes doubled when the project that initially focused on renovations took an unexpected twist and added a newly improved car to the generous donation.
Nocca, a rehabilitation centre in Tongaat, hit the jackpot when KZN Slots donated R90 000 and a car as part of their corporate social investment project.
KZN Slots compliance manager, Millen Govender said, “We choose eight projects a year around KZN. Currently, Johnny Nair, owner of Hotshots nightclub and pool academy has four KZN Slots sites in Tongaat. This added weight to why Nocca was chosen.
“The stakes doubled when the project that initially focused on renovations took an unexpected twist and added a newly improved car to the generous donation. Previously, Nocca members used their own vehicles to transport patients to and from AA meetings.”
The car was property of KZN Slots. “There was a lot to be done on the car but when we told Palace Panel Beating and Paint that it was a donation to an organisation in need, they did everything free of charge.
The car is now as good as new. We invest money in places where we will see results. It is not about the money or the car, it is about showing the community that the company cares,” said KZN Slots general manager, Prakashnie Govender.
Nocca Chairperson, Krish Moodley was overwhelmed by the donation.
”I was previously addicted to alcohol. We have a social responsibility to help as many people as possible and we would like to thank KZN Slots for the renovations and the vehicle. Having this vehicle will really help. There is still a lot to do, but thanks to KZN Slots and Jhonny Nair, we have come a long way.”
Nocca has been in Tongaat for 22 years and has helped many people around the country on their journey to recovery from alcohol addiction. The organisation is run by 16 members, most of which are recovered alcoholics and relies solely on sponsorship to get by Nocca treats 12 patients at a time with an intensive two-week programme. The renovations included painting, adding one more toilet and fencing around the property.
Nair said, “Although I am in the business of selling alcohol, I know that alcoholism is a real problem which needs to be addressed. Nocca has been around for many years and has done a good job and we commend them for this.”
