Give of your time and do good this Mandela Day

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela

July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day).
It is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday.
The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.

It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.

If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build a country of our dreams.

The baton of leadership has been handed over to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive difference.

What you can do:

Donate blood – Give the gift of life and make it a habit to donate every eight weeks. The South African National Blood Service is always in need of blood.  It’s free, it’s simple and you’ll be saving lives on a regular basis.

Share hope – The Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa provides care for terminally ill patients in their final phase of life. You can help by donating items, becoming a drop-off point for donations, or by collecting, transporting and storing stock.

Clean-up – A group can meet to clean up the beach, a river, or dirty streets for all to enjoy.

Help a local orphanage –  Arrange a picnic, outing, or party for the children. Or, see what the needs of the orphanage are then get a team together to paint, repair, collect toys and so on.

Help orphaned animals – The SPCA and other animal welfare organisations always need help so if you’re passionate about animals, find your local SPCA and offer your services. You can donate blankets or dog food, sponsor sterilisations or help in the garden, the options are endless.

Help build container libraries for schools around South Africa.

Help create and fill care packages with the Rape Crisis Trust.

Arrange a Knit-A-Thon – get people to knit squares and join them to make blankets for those in need.
