Arrest of eight men for arson sparks protest in Shaka’s Head

Motorists should avoid the P445, the link road between Ballito and Compensation.

Protesters barricaded the Shaka’s Head bridge and the N2 Shaka’s Head off-ramp early this morning.

About 150 people were burning tyres and stoning vehicles.

The N2 and R102 are both now open to traffic, however the protesters have moved to the P445, the link road between Ballito and Compensation, and the situation is volatile.

IPSS Medical Rescue‘s Paul Herbst reported that a truck has been burnt by protesters on the P445.

Public Order Police from Empangeni are apparently on their way to assist according to the Traffic Information WhatsApp group.

Protesters are preventing anyone from entering or leaving Shaka’s Head and the people cannot get to work.

“The protest is a reaction to the arrest of eight men for arson, in connection with burning down Councillor Jetro Banda’s house earlier this year,” said Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay.

“Police are going into Shaka’s Head now to try stop the protesters from blocking the roads,” he said.
