Humans spend a night in the kennels

A group of dedicated animal lovers layered on their winter clothes and spent a cold, Saturday night last weekend at Ballito Kennels to raise awareness and money for Ballito’s Puppy SOS.
The dogs were thrilled to have a bed buddy for the night and the volunteers enjoyed the eye-opening experience.
Puppy SOS’ David Hanson is incredibly grateful for the support and said they raised R25 000 in sponsorship.
“For the first time ever, we have been able to clear our vet account and all our kennel fees are up to date,” said Hanson.

One of the volunteers, Jade Ashford, wrote the following short account of her night in a kennel:
“Here I sit with a beautiful dog, knowing that tomorrow she will remain here surrounded by these four walls, in this same small space, without a warm and cozy house to go home to.
Candy, the Pit Bull X, is lying across my legs, listening to the girls talking and the dogs barking. She has not made a sound the whole night. A quiet and gentle girl, who is thoroughly enjoying her chewy hoof and squeaky toy. This gorgeous girl is too young to be spending her life in a kennel. As the current foster mom to Candy’s nine puppies, I am honored to be able to share her space tonight and spoil her with biscuits and cuddles. However, tomorrow night when I am at home, my heart will break when I think of her here… alone. Until I shared a kennel tonight with a rescue dog, I never knew how isolated and alone one could feel.”
