Farm attack victim memorial today

The community is expected to come out in numbers to show their respects.

The memorial service of the farmer Simon Shepherd, who passed away on Tuesday, July 12 will be held today at 10.30am at the Umhlali Methodist Church.

Shepherd was admitted into ICU at the Alberlito Hospital, after being brutally beaten at his home in Upper Tongaat on June 19.

He sustained multiple injuries which included five broken ribs, a gash to the head and multiple open wounds after his skin was ripped off by a cane knife.

After three weeks in hospital, Shepherd contracted a lung infection which lead to a further deterioration of his condition.

On Thursday night, July 7, his family was notified that Shepherd was struggling to breathe and had to be put into an induced coma and onto a ventilator.

His death is suspected to have been caused by heart failure.

The family and the Umhlali police is still waiting for the results from the postmortem to confirm the cause of death.

Shepherd was well loved by the farming and local township community where he built a number of schools during Apartheid.
