Knitted to the cause
One of the sewing group members, Lenell Braney said the ladies enjoy the therapeutic activity, even more so because it is for a good cause.
Selflessly putting their hands to work, more than 30 gracefully grey ladies (aged between 65-80) meet every two weeks at the Umhlali Methodist church to develop their creativity and bless underprivileged children with hand made clothing.
Chairperson of the Umhlali sewing group, Gaynor Stead said that sewing clothes for children keeps them motivated.
“The sewing club was founded over 25 years ago of which I have been the chairperson for 15 years. Although we are not that fast anymore, we sew blankets, clothes and playing mats that are supplied to non-profit organisations that are in desperate need of help.”
The group brands hundreds of hand-made items with their personal labels which reads, “Jesus loves you” to remind the wearer to have faith.
One of the sewing group members, Lenell Braney said the ladies enjoy the therapeutic activity, even more so because it is for a good cause.
“We hear horrible stories of newborns who are born to homes that cannot afford clothing and we often assist by donating clothing hampers to them. We don’t force or rush anyone to sew. The ladies do it because they are motivated by helping people. We want people to know that the clothes are made with love,” said Braney.
The ladies rely on donations of wool or any other fabric off-cuts. To make a donation, contact Umhlali Methodist church at 032-9470173.
