The driver was delivering boxes of cigarettes when an unknown gunmen attacked him and hijacked the vehicle.
Responding speedily to a call from a hijacked delivery driver, the Tongaat Visible Policing, K9 Unit and Tactical Response Team recovered a number of boxes of cigarettes worth R130 000 and the British American Tobacco vehicle at Sandfields, Tongaat yesterday (July 19) at 11am.
The driver was delivering boxes of cigarettes when an unknown gunmen attacked him and hijacked the vehicle.
“He was dropped off in a secluded place and told to leave the area. He alerted the police when he was some distance away,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.
“The police met him and he led them to where the hijackers had left him. They were still there and fled when the police arrived, however the boxes of cigarettes and the vehicle were recovered,” he said.
A case of hijacking has been opened at Tongaat police station for investigation and police are searching for the hijackers.
The KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on their swift reaction to the hijacking and was confident that the people responsible would soon be arrested.
“We appeal to the community to assist us in tracing the hijackers by providing us with information on their whereabouts.
“We also urge people not to buy stolen goods but to report such finds to the police,” he said.
