Freezing weather forecast for Ballito

Shark nets will not be lifted and beaches remain open.

A nasty cold front making its way up from Cape Town is expected to bring ice-cold weather to the Dolphin Coast this weekend.

Get out the winter woolies and make sure your heaters are working because the weekend’s maximum temperatures are expected to hover around the low to mid teens with the mercury only rising to a chillie 13 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Snow is expected on Sunday and Monday in the KZN Midlands and Drakensberg and some much needed rain along the KZN coast.

Kite surfers can look forward to mild wind speeds of between 11 and 16 knots with gusts of about 21 knots on Saturday afternoon.

The rest of the weekend is not expected to have much to offer in terms of wind.

The National Sea Rescue Institute released a press statement cautioning boaters, paddlers, bathers, strollers, sailors and anglers to be cautious of the spring tide that brings higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides.

Speculation that the KZN Sharks Board are lifting the shark nets in anticipation of rough sea conditions is not true and Sharks Board operations manager, Mike Anderson-Reade said it was normal for waves to wash up higher on the dunes during spring high tide.

“No swell increase is predicted for this cold front. However, forecasts are based on models and conditions often slightly change at the last minute which throws out forecasts,” said Anderson-Reade.

Spring tide happens twice every month at full moon and new moon.
