The Umvoti Water Works daily production has increased from 12 Ml/day to 14Ml/day and water rationing introduced last week by Ilembe district municipality still applies.
Ilembe mayor, Welcome Mdabe visited the Umvoti extraction plant on Monday, July 25 to inspect the effect the weekend’s rain had on the water level.
“Yesterday we were at 12 megalitres so it really is a slight improvement. If it continues like this and it rains for the whole week we are hopeful that the capacity will increase to at least 15 megalitres. At this point we are relying on rainfall only. We hope it will rain for at least the next four to five days,” said the Mdabe.
Water supply is shut down every day at 10am and opened at 4pm and then closed again at 10pm and opened at 4am. Affected areas include the KwaDukuza CBD and the surrounding areas of Glenhills, Townview, Stanger Manor, Shakaville, Lindelani, New Guelderland, Highridge, Warrenton, Rocky Park, Lot 16, Memory Lloyds, Doesburg, Mbozambo and Stanger Heights.
“Even though these are set times to close and open supply, this is dependent on the water levels at the reservoirs. Other areas, especially those high lying areas may not have water even during the times we are supposed to open supply because there is just no water in the reservoirs. We are taking each day as it comes,” said Mdabe.
