Nine-year-old saved from drowning at Thomson’s Bay
The child had come to the beach without adult supervision.
A nine-year-old boy is in critical condition after nearly drowning at the Thomson’s Bay tidal pool in Ballito at midday today.
According to KwaDukuza Lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu the child, from Shakas Head, had come to the beach with three other children.
“The older children had managed to get their friend out of the water but not before he swallowed a lot of water,” said Xulu.
He said the lifeguard immediately started doing CPR and managed to get the child stable.
“He brought up a lot of water and once he was in a stable condition he was airlifted to hospital.”
Xulu took the other boys home and they took him to find the boy’s mom as he had come to the beach without adult supervision.
“We are grateful for the excellent response from IPSS Medical Rescue who came to assist,” he said.
IPSS Medical Rescue’s, Paul Herbst, said they initiated advanced life support intervention and the boy was incubated and put on a ventilator before being flown to hospital.
The child remains in critical condition in a Durban hospital.
