GALLERY: Ubuhle ladies take ownership

Today six Ubuhle ladies use recycled items and turn them into jewelery, clothes and furniture.

Joy was written in the beautiful faces of the Ubuhle ladies of Shaka’s Head, during the official opening of their shop last Friday afternoon.

The Rotary Club of Zimbali added flavour in the occasion by officially handing over the container to the group.

President of the club, Kosh Thaver, said they felt that it was right thing to do.

“The container came from overseas years back filled with books which we gave to public libraries and schools. So the container was kept at the KwaMama care centre in Shaka’s Head. They asked to use it and today we giving them full ownership of it,” said Thaver.

The group was founded in 2008 when Ciar Koving came to visit KwaMama and found Nomvula sitting there. She asked her what she was doing for a living, and it turned out that she was doing nothing.

Today the six Ubuhle ladies use recycled items and turn them into jewelery, clothes and furniture.

Represented by Nomvula da Silver, the group was one of the finalists from last year’s Ilembe Chamber Entrepreneur competition.

“We have school pupils who we train after school in bead work and sewing. We also assist in coaching sport, particularly netball to try and keep the youth off the streets,” said Silver.

She thanked the club for passing the ownership of the container to them during Women’s month and particularly Gail Stefano for always being there for them.
