Two Ballito women are doing their bit to help the herd

“Our hope is that the Elephant Ignite Expedition will ignite and instigate change wherever we go, and that our message will get out to the rest of the world” - Carla Geyser

The Elephant Ignite expedition, a small group of women all passionate about the bush and the survival of Africa’s iconic giants – the elephant, set off on Women’s Day from Sibaya Casino for the first leg of their 10 000 km journey that sees them travelling through ten different Southern African countries, visiting organisations dedicated to the preservation of the elephant.

They include community upliftment programmes, youth education targeting conservation and sustainability, public awareness for the plight of the declining elephant population (one elephant is killed every 15 minutes in Africa – they are nearing extinction) and fund-raising support for the non-profit organisations working to protect the elephants.

The EIE crew is headed by Carla Geyser, a wildlife activist and humanitarian (she recently won the KZN BWASA’S Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award).

Commenting on the project, Carla said, “Our hope is that the Elephant Ignite Expedition will ignite and instigate change wherever we go, and that our message will get out to the rest of the world.”

Ballito residents, Yolande Kruger and Glenda Thompson (The North Coast Courier’s Consumer Affairs’ correspondent) are part of the Crew.

Yolande will be travelling with the team most of the way from South Africa to Kenya.

Glenda is joining the team on August 28 in Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls) and travelling through Botswana, and into Namibia and Zambia.

She promises to give us some great feedback during her journey and on her return.

Filming part of the journey are the team from Earth Touch.

Visit their site www.earthtouchnews.com or the elephant ignite Facebook page for up dates of the journey.
