SA’s 2016 crime statistics at a glance

The stats reveal a slight decrease in reported crime in the KwaDukuza region.

The minister of police, Nkosinathi Nhleko and the Acting Commissioner, Lt General Khomotso Phahlane briefed the porfolio committee and the media on the latest crime statistics collated by the South Africa Police (SAPS) last Friday.

The national crime statistics have shown a drastic increase with the total number of criminal cases increasing by 266 29479 from last years 218 3001 to this years 28802 480.
The highest crimes recorded in the country are:
  • Robbery at residential is up 2.7%: increasing to 195 982 from last year’s 20 820.
  • Robbery at non-residential premises: increasing to 157 054 from last year’s 19 698.

  • Crimes related to bodily harm showed a drastic increase with murder up 3.2% ( from last years 18 673 to 211 161).

  Sexual offenses are down 3.2%  with 51 895 South Africans reporting sexual offences in 2016 compared to 53 617 in 2015.
However this only indicates that the reporting of these crimes has decreased.
While the country’s crime remains high, the statistics suggest a decrease in reported crime in the KwaDukuza region:
Criminal cases decreased by 111 from 7697 last year to 7586 this year.
Crime that remained high in KwaDukuza:
  • Burglary at residential premises although at a high of 992, decreased from 1044 last year.
  •  Drug related crime has shown a increase of 174 from last year at 1168 to this year at 1342.
  • Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm is at a high showing an increase of one to 472 from last year’s 471.
 Crime that decreased in KwaDukuza:
  • Murder has decreased from 69 to 52.
  • Sexual offenses decreased from 197 to 171.
 Some areas within KwaDukuza have seen a drop in the crime rate.
 Umhlali’s total number of cases decreased to 3053 from last year’s 3329.
In Umhlali drug related crime is at a high of 499 but has decreased from last year’s 563.
Tongaat has seen a decrease in the total number of criminal cases reported going from last year’s 3263 to 3163 this year.
In Tongaat murder increased from 28 to 23, sexual offenses decreased from 71 to 62 and  attempted murder increased from 31 to 40.
