KDM moves to take land earmarked for taxi rank

The rank will be in the centre of the town, after the new mall is finished, and taxis will have an entrance between the Junction and the new exit road, without disturbing other road users

Dolphin Coast Taxi Association chairperson, Richards David, has applauded KwaDukuza municipality for allocating land for a new taxi rank in Ballito.

“That place is perfect and it is the land that we suggested when we had our last meeting with the municipality. The rank will be in the centre of the town, after the new mall is finished, and taxis will have an entrance between the Junction and the new exit road, without disturbing other road users,” said David.

KDM issued notice last week that it would expropriate about 5 103m² of land belonging to Shell SA on the site of the former Greenfields service station on the P455/ Ballito Drive between Virgin Active and the present Shell garage.

However, some taxi users said it would be a long walk to the new rank. They said getting to the rank might be a problem for them, especially if they are carrying groceries.

Commuter Nokphila Majola said that upgrading the current rank outside Sangweni Tourism Centre would have been a better option.

“The current rank is in the centre of the town and people who comes from the clinic will not have to walk a long distance. However, I do understand that by relocating it, we will be getting a bigger and more suitable rank,”

Andile Mvuso from Tongaat, who works at the Ballito Junction, was concerned about the safety of crossing the busy Ballito Drive. She suggested a bridge between the Junction and the new rank.
