The driver of overloaded taxi hit by a train – charged with culpable homicide
Two of the passengers, Denzil Chetty and Paul Ramsamy died while 19 others were injured.
The driver of the taxi that was hit by a train in November 2013 was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for culpable homicide last Friday.
The overloaded taxi was transporting 21 Lifestyle Centre Super Spar employees to Shaka’s Head when the driver lost control of the taxi just after the Shaka’s Rock off-ramp.
The taxi went down an embankment and stopped on the railway tracks, where it was run over by a train.
Two of the passengers, Denzil Chetty and Paul Ramsamy died while 19 others were injured.
Two of the injured were in a coma for two months, fighting for their lives.
Mduduzi Eugene Khulusie’s charge of culpable homicide includes three years for overloading and failure to render assistance at an accident scene.
Umhlali SAPS detective warrant officer, Vishal Chain said Khulusie’s sentence can be seen as a strict warning to other drivers.
“The police will not tolerate over loading and dangerous driving. Perpetrators will be fined.”
