Shaka spirit lights up stadium

Zulu impis of warriors in their finest dress from throughout the province marched past the spectators.

An atmosphere of joyous celebration filled the Moses Mabhida Stadium for the Umkhosi WeLembe (Shaka day celebration) at the weekend, when thousands of Zulus celebrated the 200th anniversary after King Shaka founded the nation and the 45th year of the reign of King Goodwill Zwelithini.

The Nazareth Baptist Church turned out in force and filled the the grounds for their 9am service.

The leader of the church, Mduduzi “Nyazilwezulu” Shembe, presented three cows to the King.

“We appreciate the invitation from the king and we present to him three cows. May God bless him,” said Shembe.

After the service, Zulu impis of warriors in their finest dress from throughout the province marched past the spectators.

They were joined by hundreds of womens’ groups and dancing maidens.

The king sent a strong message to the parents of the students taking part in the #FeesMustFall protests.

“These children are destroying the infrastructure and their parents are nowhere to be seen,” admonished the King.

He said parents should take the lead in resolving issues facing their children.

“It cannot be the government talking until the matter is resolved. Who do these children belong to?”

The Umkhosi WeLembe is traditionally held at the KwaDukuza recreational grounds but due to the number of people expected this year, the event was moved to Durban.

However, it will be back in KwaDukuza next year.
