Tasting Ballito’s best mince pies
We tasted and found our favourite mince pies in town.
One of the best parts about Christmas is the festive food.
The North Coast Courier journalists went on a mince pie mission to find out who has the most scrumptious mince pie in the land.

Pick n Pay’s chocolate mince pie at the Ballito Junction
Packaging: Modern and attractive with an interesting purple theme, breaking the traditional red and green look.
Look: The new chocolate mince pies are absolutely beautiful and look like a complete treat.
Taste: A decadent mix between cherries, chocolate and that little Christmas spice. It is recommended to warm these in the oven before serving them, which makes them even more delicious, but they are great cold too.
Price: R20,99 for four

Woolworths’ chocolate brownie mince pie at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre
Packaging: Classy, fresh and clean.
Look: There is a variety of mince pies this year, ranging from gluten free, traditional, dark chocolate with orange and a chocolate brownie mince pie, so it is up to you which look and taste you want to indulge in.
Taste: For someone who does not like mince pies (these people exist) this is a winner, as the chocolate brownie mince pie tastes more like chocolate pudding with a faint hint of that mince pie spicyness. It is also recommended to heat these mince pies in the oven before serving.
Price: R39,99 for six

Spar’s traditional mince pies at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre
Packaging: Traditional red packing with a sleek design element.
Look: It looks exactly the way you expect a mince pie to look – no funny business here.
Taste: The classic shortbread-type pastry is soft and not too crumbly with not too much filling inside, so that you can really enjoy the pastry.
Price: R32,99 for six

Checkers’ one-sort-only mince pies at Ballito Bay Mall
Packaging: A little more effort could have gone into the design of the packaging to make it more eye-catching.
Look: Traditional, sweet and quite dry.
Taste: The pastry is crumbly and the filling is jelly like but it does have the delicious Christmas spicy flavour.
Price: R24,99 for six
