Rapists get life sentences, Mandeni

The men broke the door of their house. and kidnapped the women before raping her repeatedly.

Two men were each sentenced to life imprisonment for rape plus 20-years for house robbery and kidnapping by the KwaDukuza Regional Court last week.

Their sentence came after the court heard how they attacked a couple in Mangethe, Mandeni in January last year.

A 39-year-old woman and her fiancée were sleeping when they were attacked by the two men who broke down the door of their house.

They demanded cell phones and cash before kidnaping the woman.

She was taken to a nearby bush where they repeatedly raped her.

Charges of rape, house robbery and kidnapping were opened at Mandeni police station.

The docket was transferred to KwaDukuza family violence, child protection and sexual offenses unit for investigation.

Both accused were arrested on the following day and made several court appearances.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the heavy sentence handed to the accused.

“These sentences will send a message to those who keep on engaging themselves in criminal activities.

“It will also send a strong message to other criminals who target the vulnerable women and children,” said Langa.
