Striders kick off the festive season with Pub Run
What better way to get into the spirit of the season?
On Friday afternoon December 16, 45 members and friends of local running club Dolphin Coast Striders gathered at their club house in Ballito for their annual Pub Run, a certain indicator that the festive season had arrived.
The Pub Run route is challenging in more ways than one. Not only do participants have to contend with a scarcity of water at the “refreshment stops” but made up by adequate supplies of beer, they also had to contend with the steep climb from the club’s location at sea level to the first stop at the Grandstand Bar located at the highest point in town.
After 3, 5 kms of arduous running, some wondered if they had encountered the equivalent of Comrades’ Polly Shorts, before arriving at their first destination. The group was bedecked in yellow bandannas as a means of identification and appropriate Christmas attire.
Dean, the owner, soon ensured thirsts were quenched by ice cold beverages, as glasses emptied so did the spirit and noise levels rise, cameras clicked without requests to smile as these runners had just overcome their first challenge.
No time to rest as there were three more Pubs to visit the group commenced running again – fortunately downhill – as they headed to the beachfront where the scene was repeated at Crush, Irish Oak Pub and the Hops.
Complimentary entry to La Montagne ended the afternoon with a swim in their pool, the culmination of a wonderful afternoon.
Pub Run organiser Esper Hewitt thanked the venues on behalf of Dolphin Coast Striders for their support.
