Don’t be alarmed by the statistician at your door
Stats SA plans to vist homes throughout the Ilembe District.
Keeping track of what’s going on and who’s who in a country of more than 40 million people is no easy task – but it’s one that Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) tackles on a day to day basis.
With this in mind, Stats SA is giving notice to the people of the Ilembe District that survey staff will be visiting selected households to administer a short questionnaire.
Stats SA is a government department mandated by the Stats Act (Act no 6 of 1999) to collect information from households in the Republic and produce official statistics.
The Deputy Director of Communication, Marketing & Publicity for Stats SA, Gabriel Dlamini told The Courier that there are a number of household surveys they conduct which require that their survey staff visit sampled households.
“It is important to note that information we collect from households is not shared with or divulged to any other person or organisation, but is only used for statistical purposes.
“Information collected remains confidential at all times,” said Dlamini.
Different households have been selected and these surveys will be conducted monthly for the whole year.
In line with its mandate, Stats SA will be conducting the surveys listed below in selected communities in the province during 2017: Quarterly Labour Force Survey, Domestic Tourism Survey, General Household Survey and Victims of Crime Survey.
The information collected by Stats SA is used for planning, decision-making, monitoring and the assessment of policies by government, businesses and other institutions.
“Our team of dedicated publicity and survey officers will be in your area during this period to engage with selected households and explain what is required in terms of their participation in these important surveys,” Dlamini said.
Should you wish to verify the credentials of any Stats SA representative working on these projects, or have any questions regarding the survey, contact the Provincial Survey Coordinators’ offices on 031-360 0600.
