Bringing creativity to commercial spaces

The dynamic Ballito design duo of Hamish and Brenda Herd are the artists behind the funky decorative ceiling installations scattered throughout the Ballito Junction.

“Art is a love affair – it is a calling,” said Hamish, who with Brenda has been in the art industry for the past 20 years.

Art-Forms, the Herd’s company, has been involved in the interior decoration of casinos and hotels across the country, including Monte Casino, the Wild Coast Sun, Sun Coast Casino and now The Junction.

They told The Courier that getting everything done on time for the grand opening led to a few sleepless nights.

“We literally worked day and night to get it complete. It may seem simple, but when you are the one trying to bolt installations to the ceiling above the four-storey drop through the escalator space, it gets a little nerve wracking.”

The ceiling installations in The Junction were designed by MDS Architects and built and installed by Art-Forms together with Shakashead NPO, Ubuhle, which did four paintings for the mall’s offices.

The couple met while Brenda was still in the film industry.”I called Hamish to give him a job but in the end, he ended up giving one to me and that is how we met,” said Brenda.

They have been married for 18 years and have four children. Born in Johannesburg and Empangeni respectively, Hamish and Brenda have lived in Ballito for the past five years.

They are in the process of opening a studio for local artists to exhibit their work. The studio will be called Art off the Grid and will be located opposite the entrance to Brettenwood Estate.

“We want to create a platform for local artists to shine. The art industry is tough and people can use all the help they can get,” said Brenda.
