N2 roadworks one year behind schedule
Work began on this stretch of the N2 in February last year
Daily commuters on the N2 have long run out of patience with the roadworks north of Ballito that have been ongoing for more than a year now.
What really seems to be getting the road rage pumping though, is the fact that often when driving past not a soul is to be seen other than a flagwaver at either end of the roadworks cautioning motorists – and even they are not always present, as was the case when The Courier visited the site on Monday morning.
According to SANRAL project manager Ridhwaan Mahomed, work began on this stretch of the N2 in February last year.
“The work was originally scheduled to be completed in February of this year,” Mahomed told The Courier.
Work is now only expected to be completed in the beginning of 2018 – a full year behind schedule.
Mahomed said that the delay was due to substandard material.
“Material obtained by the contractor has not been meeting the specifications and is of infe – rior quality, hence the ongoing work.”
He said that motorists should not assume that nothing is happening just because they cannot see anybody beside the road.
“Work is currently taking place. The contractor is installing drains and constructing culvert headwalls, which cannot always be seen by motorists.”
