Back to basics with dance at Rampage Dance Company

First year students spent a week learning how to fine tune their moves and embrace and incorporate the uniqueness of South Africa into their art.

Connecting with nature and finding your zen is a vital part of dance.

This is according to Seatides dance choreographer and owner of Rampage Dance Company, Iqraam Rahim, who last week whisked his first year students away from technology and tucked them away at the Rain Farm Game and Lodge in Esinembe.

Here they spent a week learning how to fine tune their moves and embrace and incorporate the uniqueness of South Africa into their art.

Rahim said he did a cultural retreat every year which was a teaching method that helped heighten the children’s senses, improving their rhythm and flow and eliminating a fast-paced and pressurised environment.

“Generally, we do an exchange programme where we visit other dance studios in Canada and India but before we go down that road, it is important for them to realize the African beauty and uniqueness of the country and its people. We brought them into nature and we are filing them with everything they need while they are away from technology.

“They have the spunk but we are giving them the know-how and we cannot do that in a suburban setting because there is too much distraction. Here they will learn photography, makeup techniques, and self-awareness – which are important factors for performers.”

The choreographer said the various components of performing would not only create strong dancers but also equip the first years with life lessons.

“We do activities which teach them sharing, self-confidence and conflict resolution. These activities help them in their school performance and to be successful, functioning adults.”

While the students will specialise in Bollywood dance, Rahim called in students of different dance styles to share and combine their techniques.
