Signs and symptoms
Rabies is a dread disease in humans and warm-blooded vertebrates, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal, most commonly dogs.
The virus is present in the saliva of an infected person or animal.
At the initial onset of rabies, symptoms begin with flu-like symptoms, including: fever, muscle weakness, tingling and burning at the bite site. As the disease progresses, the person may experience delirium, abnormal behavior, hallucinations, and insomnia.
Once clinical signs of rabies appear, the disease is nearly always fatal, and treatment is typically supportive.
All domestic animals must be vaccinated to reduce the risk to people and other animals.
Quintin Doidge from the state vet clinic in Stanger has urged residents not to touch any stray dogs but to contact the SPCA or the state vet, especially if they appear to be rabid.
The state vet can be reached at 032 437 7500/4/9.
