Meet the SAPS Umhlali K9 Unit’s new alpha dog

Captain Ryan Charlton recently took over the role of acting commander.

He is focused, dedicated and passionate about fighting crime, saving people in hopeless situations and giving families closure with the help of his furry partners.

After 25 years in the police service, Captain Ryan Charlton recently took over the role of acting commander of the SAPS Umhlali K9 Unit.

Behind his desk is a wall full of photos of his former K9 partners. Charlton said he has always known he wanted to work with animals.

“I grew up with German Shepherds and originally wanted to be a game ranger or a vet. Working with the K9 Unit was my best bet as I could be out in the field with my trusted dog,” said Charlton, who came from the Durban K9 unit.

The father of four children is a qualified advanced life support paramedic and police diver who has also worked all over the province with the Search and Rescue Unit for 14 years.

“Working with the dogs has always been my favourite part of the job, whether it is patrolling, explosives or rescue work.

“The most exciting part for me is to see the dogs working and getting the results after all of the hard work and training they have gone through with their handler. Seeing them work is so rewarding,” said Charlton whose old, loyal paw partner Ricky retired last year at age ten.

“Ricky is at home with my family and me together with our other two German Shepherds. He has saved my life a few times and I have done the same for him. He is part of the family.”
