Goodbye germs! New hand washing station for Ithemba Labasha

Volunteer Elna Rootman said there are no words to describe how grateful they were.

It was priceless to see pupils from Ithemba Labasha creche in Shaka’s Head, rushing in with excitement to plunge their hands into their newly built hand washing station last Thursday.

Thanks to a group of friends from Grace Church: Dr Helena and Fanie Nothnagel, Tharina and Theo Coetzee and Anna-Marie and Breyton Johnson who came up with the excellent idea to improve the level of hygiene at the creche.

As excitement mounted the teachers had to intervene and remove those who had washed their hands more than once to give the others a chance.

It all started when Dr Nothnagel visited the creche and she noticed that many of the children had impetigo, a skin infection, usually caused by not washing your hands.

“I spoke with my friends from church because we were looking to do something for the community and the idea of the hand washing station was born,” said Nothnagel.

She thanked everyone who contributed to making the project a success.

This is the way we wash our hands!

Volunteer Elna Rootman said there are no words to describe how grateful they were.

“This will make a huge difference and it was such an amazing idea, eco-friendly and it will save a lot of time as the pupils can be divided into groups when it is time to wash hands,” said Rootman.

After the demonstration of the station, the children had a chance to play games and Africa Ignite donated books for the kids.
