Get your German on with lessons at Ashton College

Deutsche Schule Durban teacher Hannah Mangenda offers German lessons to people of all ages at Ashton International College starting this term.

If you have dreams of working overseas, partying it up at the Oktoberfest or you just want to challenge your brain, this is for you.

Deutsche Schule Durban teacher Hannah Mangenda offers German lessons to people of all ages at Ashton International College starting this term.

Originally from Germany, Mangenda first came to South Africa on a social service year in 2002.

“I am part of the Baha’i faith which encourages their youth to give a year of their time to be of service to the community. I was involved with a project that travelled the country educating people about social issues focusing mainly on racism and HIV Aids through drama and dance workshops,” said Mangenda, who plays the piano and adores making music.

It was during this time that she met and fell in love with her now husband, Anis – a former DRC refugee.

“My husband was studying chemistry at the UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus. I found out that I could study my chosen subjects – maths, drama and languages – at the Howard College campus and so I came to Durban in 2004,” said Mangenda, who went on to complete her masters in applied theatre.

“I believe theatre is a powerful communication tool. I have always loved reading, communication and languages. The thrill of learning a new language and using it has always inspired me.”

She went on to work for a NGO called Clowns without Borders and started teaching German at UKZN in 2008 until 2015 when the department was closed.

The mother of three children – Mona (12), Martin (7) and Nabil (3) – has been full-time at the Deutsche Schule Durban as the German co-ordinator since 2015.

The fun-loving German expert said she would encourage anyone, whether you have German roots or not, to try learn a new language.

“Learning multiple languages in general strengthens children’s cognitive development and intercultural skills as well as their social confidence. German in particular is useful as it broadens your study and work opportunities both abroad and within South Africa.”

Everyone is welcome to join the Wednesday lessons. Contact Hannah at 031- 267 1307 or send a WhatsApp to 082 399 0224.
