Ballito Library gets e-upgrade
Librarian Shakila Singh said they were thrilled about the additional computers.
When Ballito surfer Tammy Smith saw a need at the Ballito library, she jumped into action last week.
Tammy said she spends many weekends studying at the library and noticed the ever-building queue of people waiting to use the four highly sought-after computers.
“Many people do not have access to the internet, so this is their only chance to get research and work done online,” said Smith, who is studying towards her BSc honours in environmental management.

She spoke to the librarian about the problem and together with a local electronics recycling company, SIMS Recycling Solutions, where she works, came up with a solution.
“SIMS’ supported non profit company WeCare donated two Lenovo high spec computers with Windows 10 to the Ballito library.
“We also put up an e-waste recycling station at the library’s entrance where residents can drop off any small electronic waste such as cables, laptops and phones, but no lighting equipment.”
Librarian Shakila Singh said they were thrilled about the additional computers.
“This will make such a difference, especially on the weekends. Now we can hopefully get a cyber cadet too who can help teach the kids how to use the computers and assist them with their research, as we have many disadvantaged children who come here to study,” said Singh.
