Get It Magazine, Courier shine at Caxton Excellence Awards
The annual awards evening brings together Caxtonians from around the country, all vying for the media groups' coveted awards.
It was a night to remember at the annual Caxton Excellence Awards last week as both Get It Magazine Ballito-Umhlanga and The North Coast Courier shone brightly by scooping a handful of top awards in various categories.
Hosted at the lavish Maslow Hotel Time Square in Pretoria, the Renaissance themed awards evening brings together Caxtonians from around the country, all vying for the media groups’ coveted awards.
The two North Coast based publications brought home some big awards this year, including Best Get It Magazine, Best Get It Journalist and Best Glossy Feature.

The judges commended the Get It team, saying that Get It Ballito-Umhlanga was clean, fresh and had an excellent mix of personalities.
“The pagination was impressive. This was a decent size magazine that could hold its own against sold consumer mags.”
Editor Leah Shone said how incredibly honoured the team was to have received the award.
“As the editor, I feel extremely lucky to work with a fantastic team, who always go above and beyond to produce a magazine we are all very proud of.”
Best Glossy Feature was won by Courier graphic designer Nicole von Metzinger and reporter Elana Wagner for the Ballito Pro Magazine, which the panel said had an outstanding simplistic design that boasted dynamic elements.
“Typography and images are great. Good page layout and use of colour. This publication is a keeper.”
Best Get It Journalist was awarded to Monique de Villiers-Delport, who said she was passionate about her job and absolutely loves the product she works on.

“Sharing the stories of the people and places in our area is an incredible honour and walking away with this prize after eight years of working for the title is the most amazing accolade!”
Editor Leah Shone said it was a well-deserved win for a hard-working, dedicated journalist
Among the prizes brought home was the Individual Entry Art Category for the Renaissance Art Project, which was awarded to the person who designed and executed a Renaissance themed work of art according to this year’s awards theme. The winner was ultimately The Courier with ‘Mona Lisa’, created by Janelle Barnard.
“The amount of work that went into this painting was amazing! It had depth and texture. The fact that it is little pieces of your newspaper really made it yours,” said the judges.
Nicole Von Metzinger was also featured as a finalist in the Ad Designer of the Year category, as well as Courier photographer Amy Jenkins in the Best Human Interest Photo category.
The North Coast Courier and Get It Ballito-Umhlanga are both published by the Wordsmiths Group of Ballito.
