UPDATE: Millions pour into Dube Trade Port

To date, the first phase has created more than 12 000 job opportunities - of which 3246 are permanent jobs in the precinct.

Dube Tradeport is expanding by 45 hectares – which is expected to attract R18bn of investment – in its second phase of development.

Following the success of the now fully occupied first phase of the Dube Trade Port Special Economic Zone (DTP SEZ), MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala said the multi-billion rand second phase comes at a time when KZN sees a wave of investments.

“Just recently, we announced that we have amassed business prospects worth more than R200 billion which will see cranes forming the outline against the province’s sky and unleash considerable job opportunities. We made the announcement when we launched the KwaZulu-Natal Investment Book before the Presidential Investment Summit in 2018,” said Zikalala.

“We are proud that since opening its doors in 2010, the Dube Trade Port has created thousands of jobs and contributed vastly to the provincial fiscus.”

To date, the first phase has created more than 12 000 job opportunities – of which 3246 are permanent jobs in the precinct – while attracting R3,2 billion in private sector investment.

Phase two will soon be the home of massive companies providing new job opportunities while stimulating the economy.

One of the most exciting upcoming investment comes from the Mara Group who Zikalala said signed a lease agreement with Dube Trade Port and plans to invest R1.5 billion into Africa’s first, fully-fledged smartphone factory.

“Phase two offers immense opportunities in sectors such as electronics, aeronautical services such as aircraft maintenance, aircraft repair, overhaul, fixed base operations and executive aerospace among the many offerings,” he said.

Dube Trade Port CEO Hamish Erskine said scores of companies had shown interest in the phase two sites.

“We are confident that we will be in a position to make some major announcements in this regard soon.”
