Investing in the youth of KwaDukuza

Siza Water managing director Shyam Misra said he would like to see recipients help build the local economy by setting up practices in the area and creating jobs for locals.

Seven students from KwaDukuza were awarded Siza Water academic bursaries recently.

At a breakfast function to award bursaries for the fourth consecutive year, Siza Water managing director Shyam Misra said he would like to see recipients help build the local economy by setting up practices in the area and creating jobs for locals.

“Because of the success of the students who are already part of the bursary, we are continuing with the programme. This is an opportunity for the youth to make a success of themselves, their communities and our country,” said Misra.

Being a professional was not about the money and the status but about uplifting the community and the country through creating employment and setting in motion a chain reaction that leads to overall improvement.

Speaking on behalf of other students, second year bachelor of education student Zinzi Nyaka said education was the most important gift that could never be taken away from her.

“There are no words to say how thankful we are that our parents do not have to worry about paying for our education,” said Nyaka.

Among Nyaka’s peers are three engineering students; Kerina Naicker, Nosipho Gebana and Talia Nair, B.Comm accounting student Siphamandla Salulange, a final year physiotherapy student Kiara Birbal and Akshay Durgapersadh who is studying applied mathematics and physics.

Ilembe deputy mayor, Dolly Shandu pointed out how difficult it was to identify candidates in the wards and thanked Siza Water for their commitment to educating the youth.

Ward councillor John Phahla said the education of one child was an education to an entire village because it encouraged others to better themselves.

“The future of South Africa lies in the hands of our youth. Education is the only tool to achieve liberation,” said Phahla.
