Urgent appeal as Ballito SPCA needs a new home

Currently the Ballito operation is on a small site with 15 kennels and a cattery at Farmwatch R83.

The Ballito SPCA is on the hunt for a new home and is appealing to the community to help them secure a premises as soon as possible.

This is due to having to vacate the leased premises it currently occupies.

The Ballito SPCA is a satellite of the Durban & Coast SPCA based in Springfield Park, Durban.

“Currently the Ballito operation is on a small site with 15 kennels and a cattery at Farmwatch R83. We have to relocate the operation elsewhere as soon as possible,” said Durban & Coast SPCA’s General Manager, Caroline Smith.

“I would like to reassure the public that services will continue to operate as usual during the period of relocation.”

The holding kennels at the Ballito Fire Station currently serve as a drop-off point for stray dogs by members of the public, and will not be affected by the move.

“We collect these strays from the holding kennels on behalf of KwaDukuza Municipality.  This arrangement at the Fire Station has been in place for many years and serves us well as it is a very central point.

“Our Field Officer Nathi Ngise is well-known to the local community as he also carries out rescues, and responds to reports of neglect or cruelty. Officer Ngise will continue with our welfare services in the Ballito area.”

The organisation is now appealing for potential leads to secure a suitable premises.

“Even a depot-type facility will be suitable, because if necessary, we are able to transport animals to our head office facility at Springfield Park which is a fully-fledged branch with over 200 kennels and 2 enormous catteries.

“As a non-profit organisation with no funding from the State, we rely entirely on the community in order to continue our essential efforts in animal welfare.

“We appeal to members of the public to be a part of the solution, so that animals can continue to benefit by our presence on the North Coast.”

Smith urges anyone who knows of any potential sites on the Dolphin Coast to please contact her on 031 5796538 / 6500 or email info@spcadbn.org.za

The Dog Box

The popular ‘Dog Box’ charity shop in Jack Powell Road will be unaffected, and it is business as usual.

“Our fantastic group of volunteers will be manning shifts as per normal opening hours. The income from the shop helps us to sustain our work in the community and it is imperative that this continues through community support.

“We encourage members of the public to donate unwanted items for resale so that we can generate funds so that any transition can be as seamless as possible.”

The Dog Box is situated at 11 Jack Powell Road, Ballito.
