Go ahead and swim, surf or paddle – beaches are open
The sewage leak at Mahatma Gandhi Pump station, Durban caused by the failure of one of their pumps is reportedly no longer affecting the water.
After the shocking news of a severe raw sewage leak leading to beaches being closed last week, our blue seas have been given the green light again.
KwaDukuza lifeguard supervisor Bongani Xulu said all the continued hype about the sewage spill, which flowed into the Durban harbour last week, was a major exaggeration as far as beach safety was concerned.
“The city declared the beaches open and safe to use since last Saturday already.
“The water was tested on a daily basis and the results have come back clear.
“Siza Water has tested the water on our beaches and we have been given the go ahead. Come and enjoy the beach,” said Xulu.
The ZigZag Durban Surf Pro, scheduled to run from 10 to 12 May, was called off for safety reasons last week due to the e-coli threat.
However, the Build for Better Adaptive Surfing Championships, due to run on Saturday at New Pier, will go ahead as planned.
Westbrook beach’s sewage leak was also being attended to, according to DA ward councillor Geoff Pullan.
“New parts have been ordered to repair the pump station problem and the repairs should be done soon.
“People have been swimming and using the beach too,” said Pullan.
