Relief pours in for Durban flood victims

The floods that struck Durban last month left many people with nothing but the clothes on their backs, desperate for every day items that many of us so easily take for granted.

In an effort to give back to those affected, local shoppers played their part after the Durban Chamber of Commerce (DCC) made an appeal to businesses and community members to step in and lend a helping hand by supporting their Disaster Relief Initiative.

The Gift of the Givers Foundation, the largest disaster response NGO of African origin, took donations to those most in need while SPAR South Africa utilised SUPERSPARs around the eThekwini region as drop-off points for donations being made by community members and businesses.

One of the multiple collection points was Tiffany’s Superspar in Salt Rock.

Hundreds of items were collected, with a total of 60 boxes (two pallets) worth of goods being donated by local shoppers.

“We had two trolleys set up and many shoppers brought in boxes of goods. We had a very good response to the initiative,” said store manager Suresh Naidoo.

The collection ran from mid April until 3 May.

SPAR South Africa also donated R100 000 in food items towards this flood relief initiative which was delivered to the Gift of the Givers distribution centre. The DCC also received donations and support from members and businesses including Sumitomo Rubber South Africa, SAPPI Limited, Southern African Shipyards and Lenmed eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre.
