Relief for flood victims thanks to Ballito Rotary

Ballito Rotary Club embarked on one of their biggest projects to date by rallying to get much-needed supplies to those affected.

The aftermath of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique in March left thousands of people with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

In an effort to play a small part in helping the people of Beira, the Ballito Rotary Club embarked on one of their biggest projects to date by rallying to get much-needed supplies to those affected.

Realising that one of the greatest needs of the people trapped in these conditions was food, the club last month jumped into action and sourced a maize food product from Port Elizabeth, originally manufactured in Cape Town. The maize/pap belongs to the A-maize-zing Foods brand.

According to club president Richard Brooks, the maize rolls require no cooking, no fire and have a 12-month shelf life.

The Ballito Rotary Club in conjunction with District 970 set up a fund and reached out to fellow Rotary Clubs in the district, which stretches from Port Elizabeth, Free State, Lesotho and KZN, as well as the Ballito public.

An impressive R236 000 has been raised.

The truck will join a convoy leaving Johannesburg this week.

“The maize rolls were collected on Tuesday from the warehouse at Dube Trade port in a truck which was organized by the Mozambique High Commission in Pretoria. The truck will join a convoy leaving Johannesburg this week,” said Ballito Rotary Club’s John Coburn.

Distribution is being covered by the Mozambique Disaster Relief via their Ministry of Home Affairs and The International Red Cross.

“We purchased 26 100 x 500gram maize rolls which will give each recipient two meals. That’s over 50 000 meals. We are super proud to help feed theses poor people.

“This is the largest project that the Ballito Rotary Club has undertaken and wish to thank everyone for their assistance in making it so successful.”
