A beacon of care for the North Coast

The organisation provides palliative care for people who have been diagnosed with terminal diseases.

The Waterberry Coffee Shoppe was packed with supporters of the newly formed non-profit organisation, Beacon of Care, at their fundraising high tea last week.

Addressing about 80 guests last Friday, Dr Rakshna Balbadhur said the organisation provides palliative care for people who have been diagnosed with terminal diseases.

“Palliative medicine is not just about treating the disease but the effect of the disease on patients and their families and thus improving their quality of life.

“The definition of palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life threatening illness, through the prevention of suffering, the early identification and assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psycho social and spiritual,” said Balbadhur.

The team of Beacon of Care ready to help those in need.

Beacon of Care was formed by a group of health professionals, with the aim of helping those who are suffering from terminal illnesses, such as Cancer, HIV and Aids, severe heart, kidney, liver and lung diseases and neurological conditions.

Dr Helene Northnagel said in order to help, they need a referral letter and they will assess the patient’s personal situation through a home visit.

“We then provide personalised, holistic care, make you as comfortable as possible, enable you to spend time with the people closest to you and minimise the physical and emotional stress that you, your family and loved ones experience,” said Northnagel.
