Salt Rock father dies in tragic diving accident
Roger de Charmoy communicated through stories and pictures and was one of the best storytellers on the coast.
We received the devastating news of the sudden and untimely death of husband and father Roger de Charmoy in the early hours of Thursday, June 13.
Roger was on a much anticipated surf trip in Fiji and tragically suffered a shallow water blackout and drowned while snorkeling close to the boat.
Roger age 44 is husband to Haley de Charmoy (nee Du Plooy) and father to Thomas age 10 and Max age eight.
He is the eldest son of Marc and Maureen de Charmoy and brother to Brett de Charmoy.
He is brother in law to Lisa de Charmoy and Adriaan du Plooy and proud uncle to Ella de Charmoy. He was a dearly beloved friend to many far and wide.
He attended Umhlali Primary School and later went on to complete his Matric at Glenwood High School. He was a very keen and competitive sportsman and excelled at all his school sports.
Rog achieved his skippers ticket at the age of 16 and spent many happy years fishing at the Umhlali Ski Boat club and building boats with his father Marc.
He went on to manage the family sugar farm for many years and enjoyed wonderful relationships with this staff and local friends due to his passion for soccer and fervour for farming.
His zulu name was “Unogwaja” testament to his energetic spirit and questionable driving skills around rabbits at night time.
He married Haley de Charmoy in 2002 and together they farmed for the next few years before branching out into business and moving down to Salt Rock. He was involved in piling many houses on the North Coast and later became a partner in the geotechnical company belonging to Baydrive Group.
Roger communicated through stories and pictures and was one of the best storytellers on the coast! His curiosity was insatiable and he chased his dreams with great fervour. He was an eternal optimist and believed the world to be full of opportunity and adventure.
He travelled widely and lived many of his dreams – pursuing many hobbies such as surfing, fishing, rally car driving, motorbiking, mountain biking to name a few. He leaves a legacy of wholeheartedness, generosity, freedom, gratitude and passion and could not have been a more devoted husband or loving father to his beautiful children.
