Eskom warns that it could implement loadshedding on short notice this week

Repairs are progressing well on the conveyor belt at the Medupi power station which is expected to reach full operational capacity by the end of the week.

Eskom has confirmed that no loadshedding is expected for today (Monday) despite a strained and vulnerable system which the power utility says is slowly returning back to normal operational capacity.

Further good news was shared when the utility announced that the probability of loadshedding for this coming week remained low.

“The system’s improvement is largely as a result of several units being returned to service from planned and unplanned maintenance, and achieving a healthy water level at our pumped storage schemes to prepare for the week ahead,” Eskom said.

The loadshedding card has as yet not been removed from play.

Currently, Eskom continues to replenish their diesel reserves which are used to keep the open cycle gas turbines running – this enables Eskom to avoid or minimise the risk of loadshedding.

Repairs however, are progressing well on the conveyor belt at the Medupi power station which is expected to reach full operational capacity by the end of the week.

“We remind customers that despite this progress, the power system is constrained and while every effort is made to avoid loadshedding, it could be implemented at short notice should there be a significant shift in plant performance and increased unplanned technical breakdowns,” Eskom warned.
