Ballito motorists brought to a halt as KDM officers take to the streets

Officer Heidi Minnaar stressed that checking cars, trucks and taxis is more than an administrative task - but a preventative tool against crime of any nature.

The KwaDukuza Community Safety party was in force on Ballito Drive this morning, checking drivers licences and licence discs among the queues of taxis, SUVs and family cars waiting to start the day.

Teams of officers stood on either side of each lane, inspecting licence discs for roadworthy status and pulling over vehicles for further examination if there was something out of place.

Drivers pulled up with their licences out and calmly allowed the officers to confirm if all was well.

Officer Heidi Minnaar stressed that the initiative of checking cars, trucks and taxis was more than an administrative task – but a preventative tool against crime of any nature.

“We can detect suspicious items as well as irregular behaviour, and people don’t often like it when we request to check bags and sealed items.

“Early detection of drug use, weapons and and other illegal elements are picked up this way and it’s all in the name of pro-active community safety,” said Minnaar.

Motorists are reminded not to share information regarding roadblocks while they are active as it is punishable by law.
