Summerhill House urges you to put a pin in it

Summerhill House is urging businesses and school to hop on the bandwagon and assist them if they are able through either buying a pin for yourself, assisting in the sale of pins or even schools and businesses aiding in the sale of pins.

Kicking off with their second World Orphan Day event, Summerhill House says that World Orphan Day is recognised on the second Monday of November and aims to raise awareness on the plight of abandoned children.

Summerhill House is calling on members of the public to support the initiative by purchasing a pin at a mere R10.

The money collected from the sale of each pin assists in feeding children who have been brought to Summerhill House.

“So, for every pin you buy you will be providing a meal to a child,” said Summerhill House administrator, Erica Lynn.

The organisation is based in Etete and has been operating successfully for 12 years, however few people know that it’s operation serves a two-fold purpose.

Not only does Summerhill House provide a home and family for orphaned or displaced children, but it also serves as an upliftment centre where the staff run numerous support programmes throughout the year.

These programmes include life skills development, assistance with homework, youth and sports interaction, social work and food programmes.

“We all talk about the times getting tougher, and it is often children who are hit the hardest,” said Erica.

According to Erica, there are 2.3-million orphans in South Africa and, approximately 30% of these orphans are in KwaZulu-Natal.

Summerhill House is urging businesses and school to hop on the bandwagon and assist them if they are able through either buying a pin for yourself, assisting in the sale of pins or even schools and businesses aiding in the sale of pins.

Currently, pins are available at Ashleigh D, Curro Mount Richmore, Beira-Alta, Bird & Co, Coco Der Mer Boutique Hotel, Mozambik and Peron-Peron.
