Strong possibility of loadshedding for the rest of the week

The national power utility has been struggling to keep the lights on since Thursday last week.

South Africans can expect load shedding to continue this week.

Eskom announced on Sunday evening that stage 2 rotational power cuts would continue overnight and all day on Monday until 11pm today.

The struggling power utility said the likelihood was high that power rationing will be implemented for the rest of the week.

Eskom said it was hoping to use the weekend to fix unplanned outages of generating units, but announced on Sunday evening that additional units had been lost.

Unplanned breakdowns were at above 12 000MW on Sunday evening, about a quarter of the utility’s nominal generating capacity.

Eskom said it would be implementing load shedding overnight on Sunday to enable it to replenish water supplies for its pumped storage schemes, which it hopes will help lessen the impact of cuts during the week.

“The probability of load shedding remains high for the week as a result of a shortage of capacity,” said Eskom.

The national power utility has been struggling to keep the lights on since Thursday last week.

On Friday, it continued with the blackouts, escalating the load-shedding from stage two to stage four, for the afternoon, and continued to plunge the country into darkness over the weekend.

The powers cuts have been attributed to units that unexpectedly went off line as well as “wet coal” that was hard to handle.

“We continue to experience coal-handling problems at a number of our power stations as a result of wet coal, which has led to generation units being unable to produce power,”

“Eskom said in the wake of the unexpected power outages which has cost the country milions.

“We continue to ask customers to reduce demand as a concerted collective effort to avoid or lessen the level of load shedding. |As we continue to experience rainy and cooler weather in some parts of the country we as that customers use efficient heating to keep warm and switch off geysers over peak periods.” it said.
