Update: Child’s body found north of Tugela River
A rip current swept ten people out to sea at Tugela on Sunday where an extensive search for a missing five-year-old girl was conducted.

The missing five-year-old girl’s body was recovered yesterday after an extensive search.
NSRI Ballito station commander, Quentin Power confirmed that her body was found some 2kms away from where she had gone missing on Sunday.
According to Power, her body was retrieved by police divers.

Lifeguards on Sunday rescued nine people from a mass near-drowning at Tugela River Mouth’s northern bank.
At around 2.30pm that afternoon, NSRI Ballito duty crew heard that multiple people had been swept out to sea in a rip current.
Both the NSRI, Mandeni lifeguards and the police search and rescue units went to assist.
“We found that the lifeguards had rescued nine people in the surf line bringing them back to shore safely,” said NSRI Ballito station commander, Quentin Power.
No one had been injured but a five-year-old girl was still missing.
Lifeguards and the NSRI attempted to search for the missing girl but she could not be found.
“Our sea rescue craft Wave Runner 4 was launched and a drift and current analysis was done.
“Despite an extensive search no sign of the child was found on Sunday,” said Power.
The search for the missing girl continues.
