Thieves strip children’s NGO at Groutville of everything, even food

She said it saddened her to see the children walking up to their container, expecting to get food, and being turned away.

A Groutville non-profit organisation, Sinikithemba Organisation, is struggling after it lost almost everything in a burglary last December.

Thembelihle Zwane said the thieves took everything valuable, including food for the more than 70 children they cater for.

“We had a very dark festive season because we could not provide the help we had committed to. We provide lunch for vulnerable children twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday. We also provide breakfast every day. But since the break-in, we are unable to do that, which breaks our hearts,” said Zwane.

She said it saddened her to see the children walking up to their container, expecting to get food, and being turned away.

The thieves also took all their office equipment, including their computers, a laptop, camera and cellphone.

“We lost all our records and so we humbly ask for anyone who can help with computers. Without a computer, it is very difficult to keep our records safe.”

The organisation distributes food parcels monthly to needy families and child-headed households.

They also provide homework supervision, teach reading and writing and give advice on issues like teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS.

Sinikithemba’s staff salaries are paid by the department of social welfare. The non-profit is a beneficiary of The North Coast Courier Oprhan Fund, receiving monthly food vouchers.
