Protec learners need taxi fare for extra lessons
For the past two years the Tongaat Hulett group has been subsidising their taxi fare, but since falling on troubled times that subsidy is being withdrawn.
Tongaat’s advanced learning centre, Protec, is appealing for help in transporting gifted students from a remote area of Upper Tongaat.
Fifteen students from Nondenisa, a deep rural school in Bamshella, Upper Tongaat, who have been benefitting from extra lessons in science and maths every Saturday now risk losing this privilege as they cannot afford the transport costs.
For the past two years the Tongaat Hulett group has been subsidising their taxi fare, but since falling on troubled times that subsidy is being withdrawn.
Protec Tongaat head, Marion Takis, said the majority of learners from Nondenisa come from single parent families that survive entirely on social grants. Learners selected for Protect classes are those who have shown a particular aptitude for maths and science.
“The Tongaat Hulett donation enabled us to pay a designated taxi to bring the learners to and from Saturday school and vacation school during holidays. It will be heart-breaking to see these deserving young learners having to leave because they cannot afford the travel expenses,” said Takis.
The school needs R60 per learner to attend the 42 Saturday schools held during the year, a total cost of R37 800.
Takis said that in recent months, she had been heartened by a number of previous students making donations to help keep the school going.
For example, former student Nondumiso Mdima sent a R2 000 donation with this letter: “It brings me great joy to inform you that I am now working as a Civil Eng EIT at Sasol, Secunda. Protec has played a huge role in my journey to becoming an engineer and has introduced me to amazing individuals. Please accept a small token of my appreciation as I definitely want future students to experience the benefits of Protec and become dynamic professionals.”
