Covid-19: Help the helpless

Supported by The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, these NGOs feed hundreds of children daily and, while it remains unclear how they will operate under the lockdown restrictions they remain determined that the children will not suffer as a result.

School feeding schemes which provide a daily meal for thousands of vulnerable children on the North Coast came to a grinding halt with the recent announcement of the extended school holiday and now the 21 day lockdown.

Local non-government organisations (NGOs) are trying to pick up where the feeding schemes have left off and these NGOs need your help now, more than ever.

Supported by The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, these NGOs feed hundreds of children daily and, while it remains unclear how they will operate under the lockdown restrictions they remain determined that the children will not suffer as a result.

Orphan Fund co-ordinator Jane Armstrong said they were calling on the public to donate money, soap and tinned/dry food to the Orphan Fund, which will then be distributed to the NGOs on the front line.

Donation boxes have been placed at Lifestyle Superspar, Food Lovers, Pick ‘n Pay at Ballito Junction and Tiffany’s Superspar during lockdown.

“When you go out to shop for your family please spare a thought for our children and help fill up the donation boxes or make an EFT,” said Armstrong.

Numerous locals are also making soup which will be donated to people who need it most.

Orphan Fund founder, Rose Stephenson said that they were excited to hand over the first collection of soup to the Saps on Wednesday, who will in turn distribute it directly to those most in need.

“Distributing the food has proved a difficult task with the lockdown but, fortunately the Saps came to our rescue. We would like to send out our heartfelt thanks to Captain Vinny Pillay and his fellow officers,” said Stephenson.

All precautions are being taken to ensure that the donations are sterile and virus free.

To donate to the campaign, Orphan Fund bank details: ABSA branch: 630229, Acct No: 9109572488 with reference ‘Covid-19 Support’, followed by your name and surname.
