Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira calls for Earth Day action in lockdown

The world marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day today but there will be no large gatherings across the nation as there were in the past years.

However, local rugby legend and Salt Rock resident Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira will be doing his part to make a difference as he joins the Earth Day challenge as part of Husqvarna’s Grow Our Beloved Country initiative.

The annual push to raise public awareness about the environment and inspire action to protect it comes amid a health crisis that has forced unprecedented shutdowns in the country.

Though some environmental leaders think a sea change at corporate and political levels is required to curb climate change, they also believe small, individual steps are crucial.

Last year on Earth Day, residents gathered in groups to plant trees, sponsor cleanups along beaches and remove invasive plants.

While the coronavirus pandemic presents challenges for Earth Day activities with social distancing and stay-at-home regulation in place there are still ways to make a difference.

Whether you have a large garden or a tiny herb box on your balcony or window sill, you can do your bit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

The Grow Our Beloved Country initiative calls for South Africans to do their part in helping to make the world a greener place by creating green spaces that can help fight climate change and environmental degradation, a global challenge with far-reaching consequences.

With the support of Husqvarna’s well-known brand ambassador Mtawarira, Grow Our Beloved Country provides great gardening tips to green up your spaces for the greater good.

Plant vegetables, herbs and flowers in the earth or pots to help nourish bees, butterflies and other creatures.

Making a mini-garden can ease stress while working from home – and entertain and educate younger members of the family.

“We all need to be doing more for the earth, and at the same time, we can enjoy the gardening time with our families in the comfort of our homes. I’m sure many South Africans feel the same way,” said Mtawarira.
