Protec pleads for students to be connected

Working mostly with pupils from poor communities, Protec is sending out an appeal for donations of old phones or devices capable of connecting to the internet in an effort to ensure that learners can receive online learning material and resources.

Protec, a career enrichment programme promoting math, science and technological literacy for pupils in grade 10, 11 and 12 needs your help to keep students from losing out on their education.

Working mostly with pupils from poor communities, Protec is sending out an appeal for donations of old phones or devices capable of connecting to the internet in an effort to ensure that learners can receive online learning material and resources.

“The challenge we are facing is that not all of our learners have a device that has an internet connection,” said Protec Tongaat branch manager, Marion Takis.

She appealed to those who are able to consider donating.

“If you, or your colleagues have a device that has internet access that you are no longer using, please could you donate it to our learners. One would need to ensure that it is unlocked and that it will work with a new sim card.”

She said if donors were able to arrange for a Telkom sim card that it would be greatly appreciated.

“Telkom have a wonderful learning platform, bcxlearn, which is free to Telkom subscribers and uses no data,” she said.

While data costs remain a problem, Protec is talking to service providers who they are hoping would come on-board as sponsors.

The third challenge, according to Takis, is signal and would welcome any advice to overcome this issue.

“We really want to ensure that our learners are not further disadvantaged by the restrictions of lockdown. Sadly, the inequalities in our country, especially with regard to education are once again being highlighted.”
